Merry Christmas - Frohliche Weihnachten

I found this vintage page from a book and fell in love with the little angels decorating the Christmas tree. I loved the texture of the paper, the slight aging turning it into a vanilla hue. I love books and paper - I have a problem...it's an addiction and this illustration is one of the reasons why...I just can't resist.

Frohliche Weihnachten is German for Merry Christmas.

This illustration is by Martha Wessels, so brilliant in her use of color and detail. From the tousled hair, to the rosy cheeks and delicate wings - adoreable. I have been unable to find any information regarding this very talented artist and this makes me sad. Who was she? I love her work, I'll have to continue my research. I'll keep you posted.

Sweet candles on the tree with the little doll sitting below is so charming. Sweet little angels.
One tiny angel kneeling to lift presents out of the basket filled with fruit, evergreen, and presents for under the tabletop tree. The perfect image of the season.

I hope you are all enjoying the Holiday preparations, I went to Whole Foods, stopped by an Antique Shop for a few stocking stuffers, finished two necklaces for gifting, popped in at the Post to ship packages, and I really need to be wrapping presents....but, instead I am blogging for my friends, just to send along my wishes for a Happy Holiday.

May the cold find warmth,
May the lonely find solace,
May the hungry be fed,
May the sick be comforted,
May we all find peace in this Holiday season.

Blessings to you and yours, xo Julie

I was just putting away my old German postcards that my grandmother would receive from her relatives in Germany. I noticed the illustrator on one of them that has a postmark of 1955 and decided to see what I could find out about her and ran across your post. Her drawings are beautiful!
